Look who is back!

Be On The Scene has had a lot of interesting activities past and present. One of the activities that stood out for me was the previous music contest back in May.

A gentleman by the name of Tony Goff joined this contest and surprised us all. He came out of nowhere and captured the voter’s ears and hearts in his successful attempt at winning over all. He ended up with more than 3000+ votes.

In a surprising turn of events, Tony has come back this month to join in on our current music contest in what he describes as, “We want to hold on to the BOTS title”
Will Tony do it again? I decided to catch up with him and find out what he has been up to.

So Tony, welcome back, how did you find your last experience with us and the event?
I thoroughly enjoyed the last competition. It was a lot of fun but very hard work. The experience after it was great! I had a great time headlining the bots event and doing the interviews.

You seem to be a very busy individual, what have you been up to since the Contest?
Since winning the Bots  music contest, I have been very busy with the EP dropping, which I knew was going to be hectic but winning just added to that, and things are looking very positive at the moment. I have been playing many festivals, doing radio interviews shows.  I’ve also just recorded official music video for upcoming single (Snakes and Ladders) with Digital snowball.

Tell me about the experiences you had shooting the videos?
Shooting the video was a lot of fun. Videos on my YouTube page are mainly location videos now. Please check them out and share. A lot of travelling was involved and we were very lucky to work with digital snowball with new single snakes and ladders

You have joined forces with Mayamada co-founder Nigel Twumasi and have something in the pipeline; can you share a little info for our readers?
With Nigel from Mayamada, it’s still early days but there are talks of event together plus more, but I can’t share too much as its all still a working progress

Lastly, do you think you are going to win the contest again?

Will I win? Who knows...? I don’t enter to come second though!

Check out Tony’s music and see all his upcoming events through his BOTS Profile as well as other BOTS members that are taking part in our online music contest. Your votes will allow the winner to spend a day in the recording studio with Stuart Epps, who has worked with Elton John, Kiki Dee, Oasis, John Lennon and Led Zeppelin. They will also get the opportunity to headline out live Event at Madame JoJo’s on September 19th, as well as Premium Membership with BOTS, a written and video interview and cash to spend in a music store of their choosing!

Presenter Ross Fiddes revisited.

A few days ago, I was going through Be On The Scenes Blogs and I stumbled across my very first Blog entry. It was my favourite children’s presenter and Be On The Scene Member Ross Fiddes. I was lucky enough to interview him back in February, which can be found here.  (http://beonthesceneuk.blogspot.co.uk/2013/02/ross-fiddes-around-world-in-20-plates.html

I decided to check back and find out what Ross has been up to, as when we last spoke,  he was about to go into the creative process for a new episode of his cooking show, aptly named, 'Around the world in 20 plates.' The show is aimed at children and intended to educate them on different cuisines from around the world.

Since then, Ross has a great new show reel and has completed the 6th episode for the cooking show which is Kenyan Themed. Ross is Charming, Vivacious and Charismatic and in this show, it is evident. It’s wonderful to see the development from the very first episode. Ross has also been active in some great activities such as the You Generation Presenter Competition, Wheelchair Rugby League World Cup 2013, being shortlisted for Blue Peter and in addition to presenting; he is also a runner for CBBC. There’s no doubt that this is one busy individual.

Let’s show our fellow member, friend and presenter the support he deserves and visit his profile on www.beonthescene.com. or you can also view all his videos including Show reels, episodes from 'Around The World in 20 Plates' and all the other activitys Ross got involved with via his social media pages:

Close up with Cyrielle Pailloux

                                                              "Less is more... sometimes."

Let us introduce to you, Cyrielle Pailloux, a 26 year old Make Up artist who moved to the UK in 2005 to pursue a career in Theatre Designs. After securing a place at the University of Leeds, she graduated in Performance Design and has never looked back. For a year and a half, she worked as a trainee project/stage manager and has now found herself working as a freelance make- up artist. Passion is evident in her as she is now undergoing a part time media makeup course to broaden her many skills.

In a Brief interview with her, here's what she had to say.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I have been interested in the Arts and Dance since I was a little girl and undertook ballet and contemporary lessons since I was 4. I got involved in a musical at the age of 16 as a dancer and gradually evolved to also being Hair and Makeup Artist when the professional Makeup team left. I have been doing the hair and makeup for my old dance school ever since. I have a lot of experience in stage and production makeup such as musicals like 'Les Misérables', 'Martin Guerre', 'Guys & Dolls', and dance productions. I have also worked on photo shoots, fashion show, music video and TV commercials.

What kind of products do you use and why?
I use a lot of the Illamasqua products which are all about colours and making a statement, especially the new collection I'mperfection. Their foundations are some of the best I've worked with especially for photo shoots and Catwalks. It is perfect with the type of lighting used. I also use quite a few of the Sleek colour palettes and colour pigments which I think stand out extremely well on any skin types and really have that wow factor that you look for with any products.

What has been the hardest challenge you have faced?

The hardest challenge in this industry is the constant competition between makeup artists. I have a lot of friends who are makeup artists like me, with or without experience, and a lot see each other as competition which can turn into a really nasty and backstabbing business rather than trying to help each other out.

What is your favourite type of Makeup Artistry?

I would say that my preferred makeup style/artistry is special effect makeup whether it is fantasy or horror, involving latex, prosthetic, burns, masks, etc. I also really like glamorous and feminine makeup style such as 1940s - 1950s where women looked really sophisticated.

What has been the greatest highlight and low light of your career?

One of my greatest highlight in my career so far would be when I worked on 'Les Misérables' with a French company in 2008 - 2009. It is one of my favourite musicals and doing the makeup for it was just incredible. It involved so many different techniques and styles: natural look, prostitutes, scruffy and dirty, drunk, wounds and ageing (throughout the performance). It really was a wonderful experience and a great crew as well.
I honestly cannot think a low light so far. Each experience I has been rewarding and interesting in different ways.

Any bit of advice or tips you can give our members?
Listen to what the designer or photographer needs/wants... don't always try to do big, bold and flashy makeup because you want to impress and think it will make you stand out from the crowd. The photographer/designer will only use you again if you truly listen to what HE/SHE wants and portray it how he/she wants it. Less is more sometimes.

Do you have any questions for Cyrielle? come and meet her at our next Event

Kel Ramajong Creative Designer Behind 'Iconicity'

'The hard graft can sometimes leave a sting in your tail and it is easy to give up, but if you have a genuine love for what you do you will keep going.'

With Fashion week having made its rounds showcasing some of the best well known household brands in design, it got us thinking about what it takes to see ones designs take shape and grace the catwalk or to even be recognized as a competitor in the world of fashion.

A young lady springs to mind…she goes by the name of Kel Ramajong. Now on her gap year, Kel stands out as an exciting emerging designer and has already paved the way for her Label ‘Iconicity’ to become every woman’s desire... All this before she’s off to university. She created her first collection for SS2013 called ‘Colour and Light’ which was inspired by her love of Marvel comic Heroines.

Iconicity exudes femininity, with bold African prints against delicate chiffon to floor sweeping dresses and nipped in waists. The collection is designed to make women feel beautiful and noticed for all the right reasons. Think about a statement pieces that could carry you from head turner during the day, to an elegant beauty oozing confidence at night.  One thing is for certain, Iconicity will be in every fashionistas wardrobe and in everyone’s hearts.

What did it take to get your designs on a catwalk?
It is a struggle to get your designs on any catwalk when you start out. There were tonnes of tears, sleepless nights, failed creations etc but the things I always had were my vision, support from my fashion family and my plan.  I finally got my first opportunity by badgering the Borough of Hounslow who let me put up a fashion show during the Multi- Cultural Day in Oct 2011. It was such a delight to see the appreciation. I got some interest from that and hence started my career as a fashion designer.
How have you gone from being interested in designing to having a commercial and your own collection?
The commercials, photography etc have all been low budget with help from my friends and family. I have formed my own little community of fashion love and I love them terribly. They always give off their time so willingly to make my dreams a reality. The quality of the effort they put into each job we have to do is second to none and they are all irreplaceable.
Tell me a bit about your background
I have always been fascinated with clothes and had started creating my own clothes when I was fourteen. This led me to adding fashion and design into my choices for my A-levels in combination with Fine Art and Photography.
I have an incredible team alongside me that helped me set up my First collection ( SS2013 Colour and Light) and to them I am eternally grateful. They spread the word about Iconicity so far and wide and their belief in me and the product is astounding. The connections we made are from networking:  attending events, TV Shows, contacting magazine and e-zines and most especially websites like Be on the scene that support emerging talent.
Working within your community is also a great place to start. By supporting community and charity projects you begin to integrate your business into the community and are able to gain more support and interest in your designs.

What advice you would give aspiring designers?
The advice I can give is to have a love for what you do first. The hard graft can sometimes leave a sting in your tail and it is easy to give up, but if you have a genuine love for what you do you will keep going.
The second thing is to have a vision: Identify your product, target audience and how to reach them. This leads me on to our motto – You are only as good as your research. Make sure you are good at it or find someone that is good at it. It makes a difference. You need to know what’s going on and what the movers and shakers within the industry are…
last is finances: The business should pay for itself. Spend money on developing the quality of your product. The rest comes with time. Spend your money wisely on promotion, marketing and advertising when you start out – find partners that are willing to work with you to achieve your dream with low budgets till the business starts pay.

Sneak a peek into Debra Pletz's Handbags

' I believe in letting fabrics talk to me to decide what fabrics like to be paired with each other and for the style of the bag'

Debra Pletz, Be On The Scene Member and creator of women's handbag collection,' Zojja Uniquely You' from Charles Town, United States has sketched, stitched, sown and now signed, sealed and sent her creations across the ocean headed for our offices in London, just in time for our March event.

Having found herself in the stressful career of Law Enforcement, she would seek solace in being creative. Whether it was restoring her Victorian home, making props for Halloween, designing her garden or hand dying scarves. When receiving an unexpected visit from her mother, who encouraged her to make more scarves so her sister was able to sell them in New York at her work place over the Christmas holidays, on a whim, she decided to make some bags to go with the package. shortly after, friends and family asked her to make bags for them and just like that, Zojja was born.

I was fortunate enough to have the chance to ask Debra some questions on her process and designs.

What is the creative process you undergo from your sketching to putting together your pieces?

Some people may think I'm crazy and sometimes I'm really amazed at how it works, but the first thing I do is go into my fabric room and ask, "who wants to be a bag?"  I then go through the fabrics until I get a feeling about what fabric to work with next.  When I pull that fabric, I begin to get a sense of the shape that the fabric wants to be in and/or if it wants trimmings or not and then get to work!  Most times I design my own patterns according to the visual thoughts that are in my head for that particular fabric.  I've also learned that it is never a good idea to go against the initial thoughts of how the bag should be.  To give you an example, I once ignored the suggestions of the fabric and decided to add something else of my choosing for the bag.  When I went to sew it, the machine constantly jammed, needles broke, the seams ripped and nothing was going right.  I went back to the original fabric and ta da!  No more problems.

How many hours a day do you spend on your bag line?
I spend at least 4-5 hours a day actually sewing the bags.  Then factor in shipping out bags to those that have purchased them, preparing for the next bag, marketing, ordering more fabric and supplies, etc.  I'm pretty much always doing something for my business everyday for much of the day.  I do make a point to take breaks so I don't get burned out.  I rescue stray and feral cats and kittens so this helps me divert attention away from the business and relax and think about other things for awhile.

How did you get retailers to take notice of you?
Since my bags are one of a kind, I market towards boutiques and on my website.  I try to get my items out into the fashion and accessories arena by way of Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Linkdin and on-line adds.  Since my line is of bohemian and gypsy, I think I stand out a little bit more in ways of uniqueness and people have responded to that.

If you had to give any aspiring designer advice, what would it be?
Always stay true to who you are.  Do not give up your design aesthetic just to please the masses or follow trends because you will be miserable in the end.  Take the time to learn your craft and do it well.  Do not be afraid to ask for help from many different sources.  Have patience.  Things do not happen overnight but you will eventually get there with a lot of hard work and determination and it will be so worth it.

Magik and Mears make MTwo

Feel good Hip Hop duo, Magik and Mears, collectively known as MTwo have blasted onto the music scene. Reminiscent of the 90's, we hear a bit of Grandmaster Flash And The Furious Five with the deliberate humorous approach to their music videos.

2011 saw the formation of the duo who released their first song 'Cruising' and received over 10,000 hits on Youtube. Following this came a succession of releases including, 'Enjoy The Show' which made it onto the Top 100 Rap / Hip Hop charts. MTwo are enjoying the success of having had  their song played on BBC Introducing and BBC Radio 1, to keep us wanting more they are now experimenting with an added seven piece band.

The road ahead is endless with opportunity but one thing is for certain, their personality which is reflected in each verse and video, with a 'keep it real' attitude will see them do great things.

Ross Fiddes 'Around The World In 20 Plates'

Can he eat this in one sitting?

Vibrant, funny and adventurous Presenter  Ross Fiddes is hosting a new show called , 'Around The World in 20 Plates'. He has been creating quite a buzz recently and after watching a few episodes, its easy to see why.

we managed to catch up with him in between plates for a short interview

what was your inspiration for the show?

Firstly, I love food. I thought why not make a show where I can present and eat loads of food at the same time?! On a serious note though, I’m really passionate about children’s television and that’s where my love for TV first began. It struck me one night whilst I was trying Korean food for the first time that I could make a show out of trying new foods and introduce kids to different cultures from around the world. That is when ‘Around the World in 20 Plates’ was born.

what has been the best moment of being on the show?

The best moment was probably the most recent episode that we just filmed, the Kenyan one. In this episode I was actually able to help make some of the food and really get stuck in there. I helped the chef make Ugali, which is a traditional East African side dish. It was lots of fun, but you’ll have to wait a while for it to come online!

what has been the best thing you have eaten?

The best thing I have eaten was probably a Vietnamese spring roll. I don’t know what it was, but it was really tasty.

what has been the worst?

The worst thing I tried was a strange German concoction I ate in the Christmas special. It was like a burger made from Rye bread, stuffed with ham and onions. However, the lady squirted loads of this strange sauce on top and it really wasn’t very nice! You can actually see in the episode that I’m gagging from it.

have you ever pretended to like what you’ve eating?

No. The great thing about the show is that it is fairly spontaneous. A lot of the food I have never tried before, so my reactions are usually very genuine.

where do you see this show heading?

I’ve been really impressed with all the feedback I’ve had about the show and I think it definitely has potential. At the moment it is going through a complete makeover, with the logo and opening titles being professionally created by a graphics designer. Once that is complete I aim to increase its popularity online and then hopefully pitch it to some of the broadcasters out there. Anyone interested??

what were some of the risks involved in doing what you are doing?

I guess the main risk is that I don’t really have a steady income. Sometimes I get paid for work and other times I have to scrimp and save, but I guess that is just the nature of the business. Presenting is definitely my passion and I’m not giving up anytime soon. Anyway, life is about taking risks right?

what were the obstacles you faced in terms of getting the show out there?

There aren’t really any obstacles really. The show is presented, produced, edited and created by me so as long as I have a cameraman there to film me and some food on my plate it’s all good!

If you had any advice for aspiring presenters what would it be?

Any advice for aspiring presenters? It would probably be ‘can you give ME some advice??’

keep a look out for is next episode where Kenya is featured.

Radio Rhythms

Tune in to singer songwriter Will Sid Smith when he takes to the airwaves on Friday 21 December.

Be sure to catch Will's radio show on Redfluxradio.com on Friday at 8.00pm UK time.

When he was 14, Will was inspired by the guitar playing on a KT Tunstall song called Immune, and took up lessons. Soon after, Will started writing his own material and began playing to audiences.

But he actually began singing seriously when he was just six years old, in competitions, as part of a choir, and then as a soloist.

Will's main influences are songwriters like Michelle Branch and John Shanks, but he enjoys all types of music, particularly Tyler Hilton, Kate Voegele, Paramore, The Goo Goo Dolls and Avril Lavigne.

London Summer Jam described his sound as "smooth pop with an edge" and Punk Globe magazine compared him to the late, great singer songwriter Jeff Buckley
